GREENWICH — The Greenwich Library is still mostly off-limits due to COVID-19, but it will be opening its doors for patrons next week to allow access to one of its newest features.
Starting Monday, Oct. 5, patrons will be able to use the new Innovation Lab, which has been completed as part of the library’s ongoing reimagining project. Visitors can also access the reopened Flinn Gallery, which opened a new art exhibit last month.
Appointments will be required to use the Innovation Lab or to visit the Flinn Gallery. The library’s collections remain closed due to the coronavirus.
The library allows patrons to check out materials via online reservations and to use the main branch’s computers as well as the printers, scanners, copies, the VHS to DVD converter and the Bloomberg Terminal by appointment.
“We’re excited to now offer access to the new Flinn Gallery exhibit and to introduce the equipment in the new Innovation Lab by appointment to the Greenwich community,” Greenwich Library Director Barbara Ormerod-Glynn said Thursday. “We continue to offer computer access as well as many wonderful virtual programs, reader’s advisory and reference by phone, no-contact pickup of books and materials, and access to audiobooks and eBooks through our extensive digital library.”
Same-day and next-day appointments are available only to Greenwich residents and Greenwich Library card holders age 18 or older. You must show your library card or driver’s license for verification at the welcome desk and get an escort to their destination.
The Innovation Lab features zSpace, a virtual reality learning tool, as well as a 3D printer and an Epilog Laser Cutter/ Engraver. One-hour appointments will be available Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. To make a reservation, visit www.greenwichlibrary.org/innovation-lab and call 203-622-7979 when you arrive.
While at the website, visitors must get a badge to use the equipment. The requirements are listed on the website.
No groups are permitted in the Innovation Lab. Only one person can use a piece of equipment at a time.
For patrons making 3D prints, the library is encouraging them to start the printing and leave. The staff will arrange a scheduled pickup time for the print or put it on a cart outside the building for a same-day pickup.
The Flinn Gallery also offers same-day or next-day reservations by calling 203-622-7947.
The 45-minute appointments are available at 11:15 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 1:15 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Visitors should call 203-622-7920 when they arrive at the parking lot to be allowed inside.
Last month, the Flinn Gallery reopened for the first time since mid-March with its 44-piece “Material World” art exhibit.
The exhibition, scheduled to run until Oct. 28, features painters Leeah Joo of Middlebury and Stephanie Serpick of Brooklyn, N.Y., as well as Branford resident Jennifer Davis, a fiber artist. According to the gallery, “All three artists bring the nuances and richness of materials, such as drapery, sheets, and paper to life through color, composition, and texture.”
Visitors are required to wear masks and practice social distancing, and also must sanitize their hands with supplies at the library. No food or drink is allowed, and the water fountains are off-limits.
People with signs of illness should not enter the library.
The Byram Shubert Library is also taking reservations for patron to use its computers. Kate Petrov, Greenwich Library’s public relations officer, said a plan is underway to allow visits at the Cos Cob Library branch, too.
