City Seeking Community Feedback on First Round of Vision Zero Innovation Program Street Safety Treatments

The City of Boulder Transportation & Mobility Department has finalized the first round of street safety treatments to be installed in Boulder this fall through the Vision Zero Innovation Program (formerly known as the Vision Zero Flex Fund).

Three of the 14 treatments to be installed this fall have already been completed on Aurora Avenue, including curb extensions at Aurora and 38th Street, Aurora and Gilpin Drive, and Aurora and 39th Street. Signs have been installed at the treatment locations with a QR code for community members to provide their real-time feedback via English- and Spanish-language online questionnaires.

A full list of the 14 treatments and their locations is available here. Locations were determined based on data evaluation, findings from the 2019 Safe Streets Report and community feedback.

Treatments being installed through the Vision Zero Innovation Program include curb extensions that physically narrow the roadway; high-visibility pedestrian and bicyclist crossing treatments; and traffic-calming elements that reduce vehicle speeds to encourage safer interactions between all road users. Before and after installation, staff will collect data and community feedback to evaluate their effectiveness.

The Transportation & Mobility Department has dedicated $250,000 of its Vision Zero funding in 2020 to installing innovative, quick-build improvements on city streets in 2020 and 2021 to enhance pedestrian and bicyclist safety and comfort. These Vision Zero Innovation Program projects are intended to accelerate progress toward creating safer streets to help our community achieve our Vision Zero goal of eliminating fatalities and serious injuries caused by severe traffic crashes.

A second round of safety treatments will be installed in spring 2021. Learn more about the program at https://bouldercolorado.gov/transportation/vision-zero-innovation-program.
